Interference Management

Effective interference management is vital for network performance, especially in dense 4G/5G deployments. A layered approach using both static and dynamic methods is essential. Continuous monitoring with advanced tools and optimization is required to keep interference levels under control.

The overall approach to interference management in this project follows a structured, multi-step methodology commonly used in RF optimization:

  1. Detection and Diagnosis

    • Identify interference sources using KPIs, MSI reports, and drive test data.

    • Evaluate symptoms like low SINR, high drop call rates, or low throughput.

  2. Root Cause Analysis

    • Use tools and data (e.g., UE traces, spectrum analyzers) to analyze where the interference is coming from (e.g., external vs. internal).

    • Rank interfering cells using Most Severe Interferers (MSI) analysis.

  3. Solution Design

    • Choose appropriate mitigation strategies based on interference type and impact.

    • Mix of static (configuration-based) and dynamic (adaptive) techniques.

  4. Implementation

    • Apply changes via OSS or planning tools.

    • Adjust frequency planning, antenna tilts, or activate dynamic features like ICIC.

  5. Validation and Monitoring

    • Post-action validation using KPIs and new MSI measurements.
